Abstract: The Pacific herring population of Prince William Sound has not recovered from severe population decline in 1993. The two most important diseases in these fish are associated with viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus and the fungus-like organism Ichthyophonus hoferi. Prevalence of Ichthyophonus has been fairly constant since 1994, but virus prevalence has been highly variable. High prevalence of virus and associated ulcers in 1998 was related to decreased biomass and closure of most fisheries in 1999. All Pacific herring fisheries are closed in 2000. To determine if disease is limiting recovery, this project will continue to monitor the two major diseases in Pacific herring in Prince William Sound through spring 2001.Proposal: View (151 KB)
