Abstract: The goals of this study are to monitor natural recovery in levels of petroleum hydrocarbons in oiled mussels beds throughout the area affected by the EVOS, to follow in detail the recovery of a few experimentally manipulated mussel beds, and to determine the biological impacts of chronic exposure to crude oil on mussels. In 1991, staff from several agencies conducted a field survey and sampled mussels and underlying sediments from several sites affected by the EVOS. Minimally intrusive site manipulation and sampling continued in 1992 at sites within Prince William Sound and the Gulf of Alaska. This project will continue to monitor these sites as well as additional sites identified by other agency field investigators. Samples will be taken of mussel beds and invertebrates considered to be a likely source of food chain contamination. Chemical recovery in manipulated mussel beds will be evaluated. Biological impacts on mussels will be determined.Proposal: Not Available
