Abstract: Major economic damage to fisheries may result because of the over escapement of sockeye salmon occurring associated with fisheries closures caused by the 1989 oil spill. This project involves procedures to assess the effects of sockeye salmon over escapement. Fresh water production from the 1989 escapements will be assessed in the Kenai/Skilak, Red, Akalura, and Upper Station Lakes of the Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak Island in Alaska. Future sockeye salmon production from the 1989 parent year and subsequent parent years will be estimated. Experimental and empirical sockeye life history/production models will be used to compare salmon production by life stage at escapement levels consistent with management goals to the 1989 escapements. This project includes studies that essentially follow the pattern established in the original 1990 study plan but with significant modifications to accommodate recent findings. The data collected will provide an opportunity to examine the feasibility of alternative restoration opportunities.Proposal: Not Available
