Abstract: This project would investigate what may be causing the failure of herring runs in PWS by investigating the dynamics of larval and juvenile herring. The proposed project, together with other investigations being undertaken as part of the PWS System Investigation, would attempt to describe the relative importance of zooplankton abundance, oceanic conditions, habitat requirements, and density dependent predation in determining large fluctuations in herring abundance.

Datasets:
EVOSTC Data Archive: The data collected by this project can be broken into 5 major groups: 1) Broadscale aerial survey mapping in Prince William Sound of forage fish schools, gulls, marine mammals, tide rips and jellyfish from May through August. In 1995 many of the same variables were mapped in parts of the outer Kenai as well. 2) Broadscale acoustic mapping of fish aggregations mainly within Prince William Sound for October 1995, March 1996 and July 1996. Validation with nearshore and offshore seines, mid-water and surface trawls, long-lines, and to a lesser extent gillnets. 3) Population sampling of herring (age, weight, length, and energetic content) from selected sites around the Sound and stomach sampling of juvenile herring and pollock over a 24 hr period processed to genus or family level (of prey item). 4) Nearshore zooplankton sampling over 24 hr period in selected sites collected with both vertical nets and tucker trawls. 5) Archived, but unprocessed otoliths from population collections of juvenile herring from selected sites. ASCII files and database tables Availability: Available to collaborating researchers and managers and through the scheduled release of the SEA database.
