Abstract: Genetic stock identification (GSI) techniques will be implemented to manage the harvest of EVOS damaged sockeye salmon stocks in Cook Inlet mixed harvest areas. Beginning in 1992, baseline genetic data were collected from 25 subpopulations from the Kenai, Kasilof, and Susitna Rivers. Samples from the Cook Inlet commercial harvest will be analyzed and reduced to stock components using these data and GSI techniques. Area managers will use this information to modify fishing areas and openings in order to facilitate harvest of the surplus Kasilof River and Susitna River stocks while protecting the EVOS damaged Kenai River stocks. Results from the 1992 field season are under continued analysis. Ongoing simulation studies indicate Kenai River stocks can be identified with a high level of precision and accuracy in a variety of mixtures.

EVOSTC Data Archive: The data collected during the course of this project were the relative frequencies of variation within three classes of genetic markers: 1) Allozyme - variant proteins formed by allelic forms of the same locus, 2) Mitochondrial DNA - genetic material found within the mitochondria with strict maternal inheritance and haploid nature, 3) Microsatellites - highly polymorphic variable number of tandem repeat nuclear DNA sequences that are distributed throughout the genome at intervals of approximately 10 kilobase pairs These data are stored in ASCII text format.
