Abstract: This project will construct a detailed genetic linkage map for pink salmon by analyzing the genetic transmission of several hundred DNA polymorphisms. The ability to genetically map the location of oil-induced lesions will allow the thorough identification, description, and understanding of oil-induced genetic damage. This research will also aid other recovery efforts with pink salmon, including estimation of straying rates, description of stock structure, and testing whether marine survival has a genetic basis. The linkage map will be completed ahead of schedule in this, the third year of Trustee Council support. Efforts to achieve Objectives 5 and 6 of this project using Alaska SeaLife Center facilities will also begin in FY 98.
