Abstract: Vessels in the Prince William Sound (PWS) and the Gulf of Alaska generate large quantities of used motor oil and other lubricants. A substantial amount of waste oil finds its way into the marine environment. Proper disposal of used oil is viewed as a problem for many communities in the PWS area. In 1992, the Environmental Protection Agency changed classifications regarding waste oil recycling and disposal, which eliminated many of the regulatory disincentives (i.e., potential cost and liability) for proper handling and disposal of waste oil. This change in federal rules offers the Trustee Council an opportunity to support a project that would reduce the amount of waste oil entering the marine environment in the EVOS area. Reducing or eliminating other sources of hydrocarbon contamination in the EVOS area will aid in the restoration of injured resources.
