Restoration Category: Monitoring
Injured Resources Addressed: Pigeon Guillemot
Abstract: The USFWS began studies of the pigeon guillemots at Naked Island, Prince William Sound in the late 1970's, which provides baseline data for assessing the effects of the EVOS on pigeon guillemots. A population decline was found after the EVOS at Naked Island, where numbers along oiled shorelines showed a more pronounced decline that those along unoiled shorelines. Except for the Naked Island group, there is no current information on the status of guillemot colonies or breeding populations in the Sound. This project, to identify and map pigeon guillemot colonies within the trajectory of the EVOS within Prince William Sound, will provide information on the locations of colonies in areas impacted by the spill, and will also identify colonies where possible protection or additional oil cleanup may help population recovery. The Sound will be divided into eleven sub-areas, and each area will be surveyed. Data will be collected and entered into the USFWS Alaska Seabird Colony Catalog computer system. Data will be summarized for each sub-area.Proposal: Not Available
