Abstract: This project will develop an ecological characterization and site profile to collect, synthesize, analyze, and document available physical, biological, and human or socioeconomic information on the Kachemak Bay/lower Cook Inlet area. The project will result in the development of a database management system with products produced in electronic format (hypertext markup language with selective use of compact disk - CD - and Internet media) and summarized on paper. Three main project components of the overall project include (1) an ecosystem narrative description, (2) a spatial data component using a Geographic Information System (GIS), and (3) an annotated bibliography and research summary/tracking system. Trustee Council funds will focus on the spatial data component and annotated bibliography. The products will be used to (1) identify future restoration opportunities, (2) assist in the use and protection of land, (3) plan for a possible long-term ecological monitoring and research program in the Northern Gulf of Alaska, and (4) assist in agency management and planning for the lower Cook Inlet area.
