Abstract: Evidence indicates that the 1989 EVOS adversely affected the spawning success and early marine survival of wild pink salmon in the Prince William Sound (PWS). This project is designed to provide estimates of hatchery and wild fish contributions to the pink salmon fisheries in PWS. Using a coded wire tag recovery system, managers will be able to identify times and areas where wild stock exploitation can be minimized while still permitting the harvest of surplus hatchery returns. The foundations for this project were established in feasibility studies conducted from 1986-1988. Following the EVOS, hatchery releases were tagged in 1990, 1991, and 1992. The private non-profit aquaculture associations in PWS continued to tag pink salmon releases since that time. Tags applied to pink hatchery fry must still be recovered or restoration and population monitoring data will be irretrievably lost. This project will institute a tag recovery effort in 1993. Percentages of the commercial catches, hatchery sales harvests, and hatchery brood stocks will be scanned for coded wire tags. Estimates of the contribution of hatchery fish to the PWS pink salmon population will be made to estimate wild stock total returns and survival. Stock specific management strategies for oiled populations and other populations will be developed.Proposal: Not Available
