Abstract: This project will initiate nearshore biodiversity studies along a pole-to-pole latitudinal gradient by applying protocols developed under the Census of Marine Life program. After initial sampling in Southcentral Alaska, the gradient will develop further throughout Alaska, along the Pacific Coast of North and South America into the Antarctic. Under GEM funding during the years 2003 and 2004, this project will sample four study sites in each of three core areas in the Gulf of Alaska: Kodiak Island, Prince William Sound and Kachemak Bay. Study sites are macroalgal hard bottom or seagrass communities, and are characterized by a high level of pristineness. The project is heavily based on local community involvement for sampling. Expected outcomes are biodiversity baseline data for future long-term monitoring programs, initiation of long-term involvement of local communities in monitoring efforts in coastal areas, capacity building, and a broad outreach to the public.Proposal: View (248 KB)
