Funding Process

Congratulations! Your project was approved for funding. What happens next?

There are several steps that need to occur before funding can be transferred:

  1. Resolutions approving work and other activities for the fiscal year are drafted in response to Council decisions for the fiscal year and sent to Trustees for review and approval.
  2. Once resolutions are signed, court notice memos are drafted and circulated to the attorneys for review and approval.
  3. Signed court notices are filed with the United States District Court for the District of Alaska notifying the court of the governments’ release of Council-approved funding.
  4. Once Council staff receive the official court notices, the Alaska Department of Revenue is provided a copy and funds transfers can commence.

Disbursements from the Alaska Department of Revenue Investment Fund can only be transferred to the Federal Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration (NRDAR) account or State IRIS Account. Disbursements from the NRDAR or IRIS Funds can only be directly transferred to federal or state government agencies. These agencies will further disburse funds either directly to another entity that will administer the funds to PIs (i.e., investigators not sponsored by a federal or state agency) or may directly administer funds to PIs (i.e., investigators sponsored by a federal or state agency).Funding award letters are emailed to PIs once step 4 above is completed. Any terms and conditions placed on the funding will be included in your funding letter and funding will not be released until these are met. Funding award letters will include links to the Council’s policies and procedures, including reporting policies. Research projects are required to submit annual and final reports, and habitat projects are required to submit quarterly reports. Report templates will be available on the website soon.

If your project is new and requires data management by the Council’s Data Management Program, there will be a required data management meeting for PIs with Council staff, and Axiom staff to be scheduled later this spring.
