PWS Herring Disease Program Quarterly Tasks

2007 Quarterly Project Tasks:

1st Quarter Tasks (October 1, 2006 - December 31, 2006)
Status: Not Applicable

Tasks to be performed:

Project funding approved by Trustee Council.

Progress report:

USGS has not yet received the funds that were approved for this project.

2nd Quarter Tasks (January 1, 2007 - March 31, 2007)
Status: Complete

Tasks to be performed:

Capture juvenile herring as a source of VEN-positive blood for the development of a molecular diagnostic tool. Nov. 1 - Initiate VHSV exposure studies as a source of serum for plaque neutralization test and as a source of VHSV-positive tissue for the identification of immune response genes. Annual Marine Science Symposium (attend and present preliminary results). Collect herring eggs for continuation of SPF herring rearing. ADF&G collects herring from stock assessment surveys, estimates disease prevalence, and sends tissues to diagnostic laboratory for confirmation. Collect adult herring for us as experimental animals to determine effects of natural Ichthyophonus infections on swimming performance.

Progress report:

1. Juvenile herring were captured. 2. VHSV exposure studies have been initiated. 3. Annual Marine Science Symposium was attended. 4. Herring eggs for continuation of SPF herring rearing were collected. 5. ADFG has collected herring from stock assessment surveys, estimated disease prevalence, and sent tissue to laboratory. 6. Collection is underway for adult herring for use as experimental animals to determine effects of natural ichtyophonus infections on swimming performance.

3rd Quarter Tasks (April 1, 2007 - June 30, 2007)
Status: Complete

Tasks to be performed:

Initiate VHSV exposure studies with larval herring. Initiate swimming performance studies using wild herring. Complete laboratory confirmation of infection and disease prevalences in wild PWS herring populations.

Progress report:

VHSV exposure studies with larval herring have been completed. Swimming performance studies using wild herring are underway. Laboratory confirmation of infection and disease prevalences in wild PWS herring populations has been completed.

4th Quarter Tasks (July 1, 2007 - September 30, 2007)
Status: Complete

Tasks to be performed:

Collect wild, juvenile herring as a source of ENV for virulence studies. Re-expose survivors of the larval VHSV exposure. Cohabitate wild, VEN-diseased herring with SPF herring in the laboratory and initiate virulence study. Complete laboratory assays for larval herring exposure studies. Complete development of serum neutralization test to quantify the level of protection against VHS. Complete development of the VEN molecular diagnostic tool. Identify VHSV immune response genes

Progress report:

All tasks are underway or completed.
