Are Herring Energetics a Limiting Factor Quarterly Tasks

2007 Quarterly Project Tasks:

1st Quarter Tasks (October 1, 2006 - December 31, 2006)
Status: Complete

Tasks to be performed:

Project funded.

Progress report:

Project awarded: Due to the relatively late selection of projects for this year’s proposal cycle, the study was initiated slightly later than anticipated in the proposal. Upon award, the study was commenced prior to receiving funds. The delay in the project relative to the proposed dates will not endanger the study’s outcome, however. The first samples were collected in early January before the severity of winter began, providing the previously described “fall” or “pre-winter” sampling period. Additionally, the delayed sampling commenced at all 3 study sites (Prince William Sound, Sitka, Lynn Canal) simultaneously, so spatial comparisons are not jeopardized. In conclusion, current progress on tasks and milestones is on schedule for meeting the study objectives.

2nd Quarter Tasks (January 1, 2007 - March 31, 2007)
Status: Complete

Tasks to be performed:

Sample collection in Lynn Canal and Sitka Sound, all age classes. Sample collection of adult herring in PWS via contract with Chenega Bay Environmental Program. Sample collection at all 3 study sites, all age classes. Sample collection at all 3 study sites, all age classes

Progress report:

Samples spanning multiple age classes were collected from Lynn Canal and Sitka Sound in early January 2007. Samples of adult herring in PWS were collected in early January 2007 via Chenega Bay Environmental Program. Samples of juvenile herring in PWS were collected in late December 2006 via a collaborative cruise with PWS Science Center. Samples spanning multiple age classes were collected in Sitka Sound and PWS in late March 2007. Samples spanning multiple age classes from Lynn Canal will be collected the week of April 2-6, 2007.

3rd Quarter Tasks (April 1, 2007 - June 30, 2007)
Status: Complete

Tasks to be performed:

Sample collection at all 3 study sites, adult herring only

Progress report:

Juvenile herring were collected from all 3 study sites during early winter and spring sampling periods. Exact ages of specimens are unknown until scales have been aged. Bioelectrical impedance analysis was performed at the time of capture. We are in the processes of finishing laboratory dissections and measurements of herring and have commenced the chemical analysis of proximate composition and energy content of voucher specimens. 4th Quarter Tasks (July 1, 2007 - September 30, 2007)
Status: Complete

Tasks to be performed:

May-June: Proximate analysis and bomb calorimetry of voucher specimens July-August: Statistical analysis, summary, report writing September 1:Submit Annual Report
