Title: 1995 Kodiak Shoreline Oiling Assessment of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill

Project Year and Number: 1995: 95027

Other Fiscal Years and Numbers for this Project: 1996: 96027

Principal Investigator (PI): Jim Gibeaut, Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies

Assisting Personnel: Dianne Munson, Ernest Piper

Research Location: Kodiak Island

Restoration Category: Monitoring

Injured Resources Addressed: Not Specified

Abstract: The project would determine the extent, origin and toxicity of oil on the surface and in the subsurface of selected shorelines of the Kodiak Archipelago. Information gathered would be used to: determine whether recovery is proceeding at an acceptable rate; whether storms have brought subsurface oil to the surface; help local people assess whether the remaining oil is affecting shoreline activities; determine the origin and toxicity of remaining oil; and determine if beaches need additional treatment. This project is expected to be the last comprehensive shoreline assessment although it may result in identification of "hot spots" that need additional attention.
