Abstract: To scale acoustic survey data from relative units (dB) to absolute units (kg/m3), knowledge of the individual fish's target strength (TS) by size is required. This project will conduct experiments to measure the TS of Pacific herring and sand lance in Prince William Sound. Most of the work under the project will take place in FY 99. However, providing start-up costs in FY 98 will allow a preliminary support structure to be designed, constructed, and tested in summer 1998 so that field experiments may begin in October FY 98. This schedule will allow a preliminary TS equation for herring to be available to Prince William Sound researchers (especially APEX researchers) by mid-December 1998.
