Abstract: This project will conduct a study of seabirds in the Northern Gulf of Alaska (Aialik Bay to Montague Island) by using a ship-of-opportunity sampling platform that is being used by the National Science Foundation/National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration project GLOBEC (U.S. Global Ocean Ecosystem Dynamics), which also will provide access to an extensive series of oceanographic data. This project is designed to identify ecological processes affecting temporal (seasonal and interannual) and geographic variability in the distribution and abundance of seabirds, including several species that were injured by the oil spill. It also will be useful to the restoration program by providing data on the year-round status of seabird populations and the processes the influence variability in their numbers.
