Chief Scientist Recommendation: Fund

Chief Scientist Comments: The request for this modest amount of additional funds is reasonable. The additional work will result in publications, which is important.

Executive Director Recommendation: Fund

Executive Director Comments: Fund amendment, which will conduct additional studies on the harlequin ducks captured and held at captivity at the Alaska SeaLife Center under this project, contingent on receipt of the 01558 annual report. Mid-way through the project year, the Trustee Council was notified that the ducks had contracted a virus that renders them unreleasable to the wild. While this is an unfortunate outcome of Project 02423, the fact that the harlequins will be at the Alaska SeaLife Center for their lifespan provides a scientific opportunity to conduct some additional research on them. This amendment will fund three small studies--a reovirus study, a feeding trial, and a stress assessment--at the end of which the harlequin ducks will be euthanized. The results of the studies will be reported in four manuscripts, to be submitted in early 2003 for publication in the peer reviewed literature. Harlequin ducks are still not recovered from the effects of the spill. This amendment will expand the work being conducted under Project 02423 in regard to long-term effects of crude oil exposure. The new work will look at stress in animals in the ecosystem as it relates to oil pollution. [Note: The Trustee Council approved funding for the amendment in April 2002.]
