Temporal Stability of Fatty Acids Quarterly Tasks

2006 Quarterly Project Tasks:

1st Quarter Tasks (October 1, 2005 - December 31, 2005)
Status: Complete

Tasks to be performed:

November-December: Collect samples from Kodiak food/bait fishery Continue chemical analysis of hearts

Progress report:

November-December: Collect samples from Kodiak food/bait fishery COMPLETED Continue chemical analysis of hearts IN PROGRESS

2nd Quarter Tasks (January 1, 2006 - March 31, 2006)
Status: Complete

Tasks to be performed:

(dates not yet known) Annual GEM Workshop January-March: Complete chemical analysis/begin statistical analysis of year 1 data March: Collect Sitka spawning samples (year 2)

Progress report:

Annual GEM Workshop COMPLETED (Otis (HOM-ANC) and Heintz (JUN-ANC) traveled to the meeting; no presentation) January-March: Complete chemical analysis/begin statistical analysis of year 1 data IN PROGRESS (NMFS-Auke Bay Lab has completed the chemical analysis on approximately 30% of the 2005 samples. The remaining 2005 samples are currently being processed with data analysis to follow. Delay in processing 2005 samples for this project occurred when samples from two other EVOS projects (040726 and 040706) requiring fatty acid analysis received higher priority in the Auke Bay Lab queue. March: Collect Sitka spawning samples (year 2) TASK COMPLETED

3rd Quarter Tasks (April 1, 2006 - June 30, 2006)
Status: Complete

Tasks to be performed:

April-June: Collect PWS, Kodiak, Kamishak, Togiak, and Bering Sea spawning samples (year 2)

Progress report:

Spring 2006 spawning samples were collected from all targeted areas, except PWS. Despite diligent efforts by ADF&G staff aboard the R/V Solstice, we were unable to locate significant herring spawning events in PWS in 2006 to sample for stock identification. One fairly sizeable event did occur in NE PWS approximately 2 weeks earlier than usual, but did not persist long enough for staff to acquire samples. Aerial and vessel surveys throughout the remainder of the spring did not identify any other significant spawning events to sample. The continued low abundance of herring has unfortunately hindered our ability to collect representative samples from traditional spawning aggregations in PWS. Fortunately, successful sample collections from other target areas throughout the Gulf of Alaska and Bering Sea will allow us to meet our primary objective of evaluating the temporal stability of fatty acid signatures used to discriminate Pacific herring in Alaska. Update on 2nd Quarter Tasks previously listed as ?IN PROGRESS?: The NMFS-Auke Bay Lab (ABL) is back in action processing our 2005 samples following a short delay to repair components in one of their instruments (GC). The first two phases of the fatty acid analysis process have been completed for all 2005 samples and the final stage is now 60-70% complete. ABL expects to have all of the 2005 and 2006 samples processed by the end of August, which would put us ahead of schedule.

4th Quarter Tasks (July 1, 2006 - September 30, 2006)
Status: Complete

Tasks to be performed:

August-September: Begin chemical analysis of year 2 heart samples September 1: Submit Annual Report

Progress report:
