Status: Complete

Tasks to be performed:

Task 2. Design a statistically rigorous sampling plan To be completed by 30 April 2007 Task 3. Conduct field sampling

Progress report:

1. Work Performed: During this period, we completed the preliminary probability model (Task 1) and used it to develop a statistically rigorous sampling plan in cooperation with the project statistician, Dr. Jerry Pella (Task 2). We also completed the following field surveys under Task 3: PWS (2 teams): 13-22 May, 28 May - 7 June, and 12-20 June, with completion of 53 of a total of 54 planned segments for those periods. Both teams left on 27 June for the next survey period that ended 7 July. Based on the remaining schedule, we are confident that all of the primary segments will be completed and we will be able to pick up some of the secondary segments. GOA (1 team): 27 May-7 June (returned 2 days early because of weather) and 10-21 June with completion of 20 segments of a total of 22 planned segments for those periods. We only completed 8 of the minimum target of 10 segments in Shelikof Strait because of severe weather, and the logistics are such that we cannot get to that part of the GOA under the current vessel schedule. However, the skipper of the vessel that worked the Shelikof Strait cruise will be doing other charters in the area in late July. He has offered to support the team during breaks between the other charters, if the tides and weather allow. Gail Irvine and a crew from the USGS will try to complete the 2 missing segments this summer. Based on the remaining schedule for the Kenai region in the GOA, we are confident that all of the primary segments will be completed and we will be able to pick up some of the secondary segments. In all, the work has gone very well with no significant problems that we were not able resolve. 2. Future Work for FY07, 4Q: The field sampling effort (Task 3) will be completed by 4 August 2007. All the field data will be entered into databases and quality checked. We will begin Task 4 which is the refinement of the probability model. The samples will be sent to the NOAA Auke Bay Laboratory in mid-August (they are currently being held under chain of custody at the USGS offices in Anchorage). Dr. Jeff Short will supervise the entry of the samples into the NOAA database management system, and the chemical analysis of the samples under our project scope. 3. Coordination/Collaboration: We have closely coordinated and collaboration with Dr. Gail Irvine (USGS) and Dr. Jeff Short (NOAA) throughout the implementation of the field sampling program. We also coordinated a visit by representatives of the Trustee agencies to the field. We have been generating a map showing the status of the field sampling and the preliminary results in terms of the presence of oil. These maps have been sent to our collaborators. 4. Community Involvement/TEK & Resource Management Applications: Two of the field team members hired for the field work are Native Alaskans from the region. We communicated with the Native corporations to obtain their permission to access sites on their lands. No problems with landowners have been encountered in accessing any of the field sites.
