Title: Common Murre Restoration Monitoring in the Barren Islands

Project Year and Number: 1994: 94039

Other Fiscal Years and Numbers for this Project: 1995: 95039

Principal Investigator (PI): Dave Roseneau, US Fish & Wildlife Service

Assisting Personnel: Vernon Byrd, Arthur Kettle

Research Location: Kodiak Island

Restoration Category: Monitoring

Injured Resources Addressed: Common Murres

Abstract: Following the EVOS, the common murre population dramatically declined in the western Gulf of Alaska area. In addition to reduced population, timing of breeding activities was delayed at the Barren Islands murre colonies. Data indicates that murre numbers have remained depressed since the EVOS. This project will undertake additional restoration actions, and continue monitoring trends in population numbers, productivity, and phenology of common murres at the injured Barren Islands murre colonies. Differences in information reported by the University of Washington studies with that of the USFWS will be reviewed.
