Michael Johnson is the Senior Advisor for Alaska Affairs to the Secretary of the Department of the Interior, a position he has held since July 2015. Prior to this, Michael has worked in a variety of local, state and federal government positions in Alaska frequently related to energy, natural resources, public lands and Arctic policy. Most recently he worked in a temporary capacity at the Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, and for the prior six years he was the Senior Legislative Assistant for Energy and Natural Resources for U.S. Senator Mark Begich. Previously, he has worked for the Mayor of Anchorage, the Alaska Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development and several Alaska State Legislators. He graduated from Vassar College and holds an M.Phil. in Polar Studies from the Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge.
