Steve Wackowski is the Senior Adviser for Alaskan Affairs to Secretary Zinke. He split his time growing up in Alaska between Anchorage and Ninilchik. Steve served as the Campaign Manager for Senator Lisa Murkowski’s successful 2016 reelection bid. Before Lisa’s campaign he managed remote sensing operations for Fairweather Science focusing on survey work and mapping on the North Slope. He is also an Air Force Reserve officer assigned to the 611th Air Operations Center at JBER. In his Air Force career he served in contingency operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Haiti.
Steve’s graduate school research focused on national security impacts of an ice-free arctic with a focus on intelligence capabilities in the Arctic domain. To conduct research, he deployed on the joint US/Canadian 2011 Extended Continental Shelf Mapping mission onboard the Icebreakers HEALY and LOUIS S St-LAURENT and conducted the first ever SUAS flights from underway icebreakers in the high Arctic.
In his civilian career, Steve served as a Professional Staff member on the US Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation committee. His issue portfolio included oceans, atmosphere, and maritime policy. He also served as Senator Ted Stevens’ Press Secretary.
In 2005, Steve graduated from Saint Mary’s College of California with a BS in Computer Science. He played 4 years of Division 1-AA football there and obtained a commission in the Air Force Reserve through U.C. Berkeley’s ROTC program.
